adidas unveils shoe with upper made from ocean waste

The concept product was showcased at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York to celebrate the brand’s recent partnership with Parley for the Oceans, an organisation that raises awareness of the environmental threats faced by the world’s oceans.

The shoe’s upper is made entirely from yarns and filaments reclaimed and recycled from ocean waste and deep sea gillnets.

The nets were retrieved after a 110-day expedition tracking an illegal poaching vessel.

Eric Liedtke, adidas’ group executive board member responsible for global brands and a member of the Parley for the Oceans steering committee, says: “adidas has long been a leader in sustainability, but this partnership allows us to tap into new areas and create innovative materials and products for our athletes.”
