A Beginner’s Guide - 4 Surfing Techniques Every Beginner Needs To Know

Learning to surf can be a daunting task. But with the right instruction and a little practice, you can be catching waves in no time!

Paddle Properly
One of the most important techniques for surfing is paddling. Paddling is what propels you through the water and helps you catch waves. When paddling, be sure to keep your arms straight and use a wide sweeping motion. Start from behind your board and paddle through to the front. Remember to keep your eyes on the horizon, not on your board. This will help you stay balanced and avoid getting fatigued.

On the other hand, if you’re bodyboarding, you’ll want to keep your arms close to your sides and use a shorter, choppier paddling motion. The top bodyboards offer you greater control and power when paddling, so be sure to choose one that fits your size and skill level. They are also great for helping you catch waves earlier, as they are more buoyant than regular surfboards.
Pop Up Quickly
Once you’ve caught a wave, it’s time to pop up! This is the most crucial part of surfing, and it’s what separates beginners from the pros. To execute a proper pop-up, start in a lying position on your board. Place your hands on the deck of the board, just outside of your shoulders. Quickly push up with your arms and spring up into a squatting position. From there, simply stand up and enjoy the ride!

You can also try a few different variations of the pop-up. For example, you can try popping up from a crouching position, or on your knees. These variations can be helpful if you’re having trouble getting up from the lying position. Just be sure to practice them on dry land first before trying them in the water.
Stay Balanced
There are several techniques on how to stay balanced on a surfboard. One way is to keep your center of gravity low. This means squatting down on your board, rather than standing up straight. This will help you maintain your balance and avoid getting knocked off by a big wave.

Another way to stay balanced is by keeping your feet shoulder-width apart. This will give you a lower center of gravity and help you avoid losing your balance. You can also try placing one foot in front of the other or keeping your feet parallel. Whichever stance feels most comfortable for you is the best way to go.
Multiple Waves
One of the best parts about surfing is that you can ride multiple waves in a single session. This is especially true if you’re bodyboarding, as you can often catch waves that are too small for surfers. To do this, simply paddle back out to the lineup after riding a wave in. Then, wait for another wave and do it all over again!

As for the surfing board, you’ll need to get up on your board quickly after riding a wave. To do this, paddle hard and then pop up as soon as you feel the wave catch you. This will help you stay on the wave and catch it before it breaks.

By following these four basic techniques, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a proficient surfer. Just remember to practice often and always heed the advice of more experienced surfers. With a little time and patience, you’ll be riding waves like a pro in no time!
