Booking a fitness class should be easier than ordering a takeaway

Kevin Teague, UK SVP and Managing Director of MINDBODY, responds to research revealing that people find it easier to book a takeaway than a fitness class.

New research from Sport England recently revealed that consumers believe ordering a takeaway is twice as easy as booking a sport or fitness class online, but in fact it can take less than ten seconds to find and book a fitness class in your area on the MINDBODY app. I love how we, as consumers, are becoming increasingly more discerning and brands (particularly in the food industry) are waking up to the fact and using technology to serve us the content we want to see, at the times we want to see it.
There are actually more options to consider when buying food online than booking a fitness class on the MINDBODY App, ordering a curry with poppadoms and rice takes longer than booking the closest kickboxing class.

As of December 2018, users of the MINDBODY app across the UK booked over 280,000 classes and appointments each month – a 29 per cent increase year-on-year. With this figure in mind, it’s evident that simply by making our industry more accessible to all, we can get more people into fitness. Furthermore, the data from our consumer research also showed that over three quarters (77 per cent) of 18-24-year-olds use technology as part of their fitness routine and nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of those who do Pilates specifically said technology improves access to classes.

Most people know of a tool or aggregator that can get them food fast, whether it be for a Saturday night feast or a Monday morning pick me up, and MINDBODY has provided the same convenience for fitness right now. Therefore, we (collectively as a fitness industry) need to push forward and make it known to the public how easy and simple it is. For example, recent updates to the MINDBODY app, such as more personalization and localization in the search means that a Sunday morning Pilates class is only two-taps away!

Looking at customer data again, the MINDBODY app brought an average of 9,998 new clients to customers each month last year – a 39 per cent increase year-on-year. What’s more, integrating with other platforms have proven an effective way of reaching more people and delivering more of what people want.

MINDBODY have partnered with Strava, meaning users can access everything they need through one single touch point, instead of having to access multiple displays. These solutions do exist and can be easy implemented to create genuine perception in the fitness industry.
