At the recent FESPA 2013 print exhibition TheMagicTouch unveiled a new and innovative way to view designs and images printed on T-shirts and promotional products using ‘augmented reality’ technology.
The company has for over 20 years pioneered the digital image transfer process, offering a range of transfer papers for full colour decoration of garments, textiles and a vast range of promotional items.
This year the company wanted to show something different and fun.
Jim Nicol, managing director of TheMagicTouch, explains: “AR technology can best be described as a QR code on steroids.
“It offers the user a unique experience while viewing a printed design and adds a new dimension to the promotions and garment decoration industry.”
How does it work?
At the show TheMagicTouch printed approximately 900 shirts over five days featuring a bespoke design printed using WoW transfer paper, which contains an embedded code.
The code is unlocked when read using a downloadable app from a smartphone or tablet device, launching instantly into the bespoke video message and interactive visual.
The message was specially prepared for the FESPA show and features Barack Obama, David Cameron and a host of other TheMagicTouch supporters.
The AR technology also allows the user to update the video content, extending the life of the product over a longer period.
With the increasing importance of social media, the AR experience can be linked directly to Facebook, Twitter and all the popular social network sites, allowing the experience to be shared.

The new TMT/OKI printers incorporate bespoke ‘Space Control’ software for total colour control and transfer management.
The white toner innovation is compatible with all TMT transfer papers, enabling full colour printing onto a multitude of different surfaces, including garments, ceramics, leather, metal, wood, POS board, PU folders, glass, and even human skin.
