POC earns two ISPO awards for ski protection
POC is pleased to announce that it has been awarded 2016 ISPO awards in the ski protection category for two of its 2016/2017 winter season products, the Spine VPD 2.0 Airbag vest developed with In&Motion, which has been chosen as a gold winner and the POC layer system as a category winner.
Stefan Ytterborn, POC CEO and founder said – “We are honored to receive these awards and the recognition from ISPO. At POC we have a clear mission to do the best we can to possibly save lives and to reduce the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists. For a number of years we have been exploring the potential of smart protection, new technologies and intelligent systems and we believe that the Spine VPD 2.0 Airbag vest is a major evolution in skier safety”.

POC partnered with French company In&motion to develop the airbag system which consists of integrated sensors and uses a precise algorithm to distinguish between a crash or fall from the normal forces associated with Alpine racing. In order to detect a loss of balance the system keeps track of a rider’s movement by performing 1000 analysis per second. When a fall is detected, the airbag is inflated in less than 100 milliseconds to provide protection for the neck, chest, spine, abdomen and hips.

Pierre-Francois Tissot, In&motion co-founder, added – “After spending months analyzing the accidents and trauma on ski racers, a wearable intelligent airbag system appeared to be the best technical solution for serious injuries. The equipment is ideal for sports like alpine and ski cross as it is based on intelligent technology able to anticipate falls and able to protect selected zones of the body before impact.
POC also received a category winner award for POC Layer which is a major step forward in personal protection. POC layer allows users to optimise their area and level of protection through the use of customized base layers.

Stefan Ytterborn, POC CEO and founder said – “POC Layer will initially be developed specifically for Alpine racing. Whether racing giant slalom or downhill POC Layer protection can be customized based on the user’s preference or specific event needs, which will also end the need for different race suits in different disciplines.”

Both winning products will be part of POCs preview of its product line for winter 2016/17 at the ISPO trade fair in Munich. Other new 16/17 products and highlights include the Auric pro helmet, which has been developed specifically for the dedicated park rider. The combination of POCs VPD 2.0 and a multi-impact EPP liner in the Auric Pro provides protection against repeated low to medium energy impacts that occur often during training sessions, as well as against more significant crashes.

Other products include a new spine VPD system vest which features new and enhanced materials and construction for better overall protection and a range of new Carl Zeiss goggle lenses which provide outstanding optical quality across the whole range. In addition, a double lens construction provides a sturdier lens which offers even higher durability and anti fog properties. The entire product line will be presented during ISPO (January 24-27) at hall B6, stand no. 506 and SIA (January 28-31).
