Southampton’s Cycle Race attracts Olympic and National Riders

This Saturday’s cycling event in Southampton has attracted riders from all over the country including Olympic, and Commonwealth champions. Saturday 4th September sees Southampton host the first Southampton Criterium and this is action packed lapped event based in the heart of the city centre.
Riders confirmed include Elinor Barker MBE who is a 5x World Champion and won Gold in Rio Olympics and Silver in Tokyo this summer. In the Men’s races Alec Briggs is number 4 in the country and has won Brompton World Championships and the London Nocturne. Racing against Alec is Jon Mould who won Commonwealth Silver in 2018 and has the most individual wins on the Tour Series.

As well as this amazing talent, the event is also hosting the British Cycling South Region Series and Youth entries as well as a First timers Criterium. There will be lots of activities in Watts park which is to host the Spin City and hundreds of riders are taking on the 100km Sportive Challenge ride.

Roads are open as per normal on the Saturday except around the Guildhall Square area, organsiers ReesLeisure are delighted to see the city coming back to life, Race Director Chris Rees, “This is going to be an exciting day of cycling in Southampton, with opportunities to take part in closed roads racing, or head out of the city for a scenic 100km or 60km sportive ride. There really is something for all to take part in”.

The Southampton Sporterium is supported by Southampton City Council’s My Journey scheme and British Cycling as part of the Southampton Cycling Strategy.
The event will be raising money for charities and will see over £500,000 bought into the local economy. Over 300 volunteers help at the event from local community organisations.
