Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards

Speaking ahead of next month’s Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards 2013, former South Africa cricket chief Ali Bacher has hailed South African athletes Oscar Pistorius and Natalie du Toit as global icons of sport and an inspiration to people around the world.

Bacher, the chairman of Right to Care and a member of the official judging panel for the Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards, told sportindustry.co.za: “Oscar and Natalie are phenomenal people. Both of them have shown unbelievable courage and determination to become world stars.

“It’s so important what they have done for the worldwide disabled community, to have seen these inspirational people and how they have overcome disability through perseverance and determination. It is the most marvellous example set by two magnificent South Africans.”

Du Toit, an official ambassador of the Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards, and Pistorius, who won last year’s award for his outstanding contribution to South African Sport, will grace the red carpet at the star studded Virgin Active Sport Industry Awards ceremony on February 7 at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg.

The sport industry’s flagship event will once again bring together the outstanding performers in marketing, PR, sponsorship, community investment and mass participation sports, as well as a host of top celebrities to recognise the industry’s greatest achievements.

Pistorius and Du Toit have been joined in previous years by Heyneke Meyer, Lucas Radebe, Ricky Hatton, Linford Christie, Kerry McGregor, Mark Fish, Doctor Khumalo, Mary Pierce, Richard Hill, Neil McKenzie, Juan de Jongh, Ryan Sandes, Elana Meyer, Shashi Naidoo, Butch James, Roxy Louw, CJ Van Der Linde, Schalk Burger and Victor Matfield – with 2013 set to see even more big names gather to celebrate the industry’s success.
