Sports shop burglars identified, thanks to social media

Two teenage boys were named within an hour of CCTV footage showing them breaking into a New Zealand sports store being posted on a staff member’s Facebook page.

Between $1,500-$2,000 (£700-£950) worth of clothing was stolen by the burglars, who broke into Stirling Sports in Masterton at the beginning of April.

Quentin Henderson, the franchised store’s owner, told the Wairarapa Times-Age he was planning on setting up a Facebook page for retailers in the Masterton area to post pictures of burglars and shoplifters.

He added: “As soon as we got their faces on camera, it was just a matter of time.

“We need to stamp out what’s going on and if we can help other retailers with the same problem, hopefully the word will get out it’s not okay to do this in Masterton.”
