Amidst conflicting reports, it's been confirmed at least one person has been shot after a demonstration outside a footwear supplier’s factory in Cambodia turned into a riot.
According to the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia, the woman is not in a critical condition and should be released from hospital within the next seven days.
The demonstration, which took place on Monday and was over higher wages and better working conditions, took place outside Puma supplier Kaoway Sports.
Kaoway Sports said it has always complied with Cambodian local labour laws and rules governing wages and working hours, adding events leading up to the riot were not aimed at the company, but was a result of local labour unrest.
Management stated that rioters began throwing rocks at the building, charged the front gate, started fires and vandalised the factory, which has been shut until order is restored in the area.
According to a report in the Phnom Penh Post, the gunman has been identified.
