Paul Sherratt, managing director of sales and marketing specialist Solutions for Sport, is attempting the Three Peaks Challenge on August 3 to raise money for The Lily Foundation charity.
Along with three friends, Paul is aiming to the climb the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales - Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon - in 24 hours.
He explains: “My friends and I all have children and were sad to hear about a local friend’s granddaughter called Lily, who was born just over three years ago.
“She appeared to be a normal, healthy baby and developed as most babies do.
“However, all was not well. She had issues when trying to walk and it was apparent she had a real problem.
“Last year, after a series of scans and tests, she was diagnosed with MELAS Syndrome, a rare genetic mitochondrial disorder.
“Though she is a happy and cheerful little girl and is developing mentally normally at the moment, she cannot walk and may never be able to, and her future is uncertain.”
