New Balance will be providing footwear for all English athletes at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Manufactured in England, the shoes, designed in the English colours of red and white have a specially hand-embroidered tongue with the inscription ‘Delhi 2010’ and ‘England’ set in gold leaf on the toe.
“We are delighted to have made our shoes for our own athletes who will be competing in the 17 sports for England at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi,” says Paul Kennedy New Balance’s director.
“It is a proud moment for all our team at Flimby, and we feel this is also a significant occasion where we can trumpet the cause of manufacturing in this country having designed and produced the shoes in England for Commonwealth Games England.”
Echoing the sentiment Liam Burns, the brand’s business development manager, adds: “The part we play in the UK’s manufacturing activity supports our community by providing much needed local employment, and, at the same time, gives a welcome boost for our economy at such a difficult time.”
Joanna Robinson, development director of Commonwealth Games England, says: “We were so pleased to have been approached by New Balance and thrilled that a brand of such standing and position, and with such tradition and pedigree amongst athletes the world over, should be making bespoke shoes for our team.
“It is also heartening and has a ring of appropriateness in that they are made here in England.”
