Way back when, some 40 years ago, as Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins were being propelled towards the moon, running legend Dr Ron Hill, MBE was busy warming up for the race of his life.
The first major international marathon in the UK, the Manchester Maxol Marathon, was Ron's big break after failed Olympic attempts. Beating hundreds of other athletes to achieve victory at Old Trafford stadium turned out to be the turning point of his career. Those of us old enough to remember the day might recall the news stories reporting the plight of the groundbreaking Americans, quickly followed in the sports reports by news of Ron’s own steps to victory. It was the turning point in Ron’s career that would lead to bigger and better victories in the years ahead
