JJB sales slump blamed on Euro 2012 washout and poor UK weather

Published: Tuesday, July 10, 2012

JJB Sports has blamed a deterioration in trading performance on a combination of poor sales of replica football kit during Euro 2012 and the appalling weather in the UK recently, which has hit sales of seasonal products.

The retailer experienced an eight per cent fall in like for like sales during the 22 weeks to July 1, meaning group sales fell significantly short of expectations.

Robert J Corliss will take over as chairman of JJB on September 1, replacing present incumbent Mike McTighe.

Corliss was appointed deputy chairman on July 9 and his experience includes roles as a director and executive committee member of the National Retail Federation, a director of The World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry, chairman of the Committee of International Sports Organizations and a director of both the American Running Association and the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association.

From 1998 until 2007 he was president and CEO of The Athlete's Foot.

In its full year results to January 29, JJB reported losses of £101 million as revenue fell 21.7 per cent to £284 million.
